We begin our Advent Season today, the FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT. To celebrate the season well, we ought to focus on prayer and reflection. In what way? One is through the use of an Advent wreath (traditionally four candles, three are purple and one is pink). Each week, a candle is lit to represent Jesus coming as a light in the darkness. It is placed at the center of the dining table and lit at every family meal.
Some other ways to celebrate include praying a rosary and reading scripture daily, and going to Confession. Also, if you or your family likes music, then listen to Advent-specific hymns like “O COME, O COME EMMANUEL” rather than Christmas carols until closer to Christmas. It is also good to avoid excessive Christmas decorations and gift-buying to maintain focus on the season of waiting and preparation for Jesus’ birth. Find time to gather as a family on the THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT (December 14), begin setting up a nativity scene, and complete it in stages (a few pieces each weekend if possible). First, place an empty manger in your home to prepare it for the baby Jesus. Add figures of angels, the shepherds, and animals, if desired. Then on the FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT (December 21), the figures of Mary and Joseph. Wait for CHRISTMAS evening (December 24) before putting the babe Jesus in the manger. Afterwards, between the Feast of the Holy Family and Epiphany (December 28-January 4), complete it with the figures of the three magi.
I strongly encourage everyone to attend Mass more often and to engage in acts of charity. In our parish, we continue our spiritual preparation for CHRISTMAS with the celebration of the SIMBANG GABI. ALL ARE INVITED to participate in this Novena Masses (December 15-23 at 7 PM). At these times, anyone may share gifts with the less fortunate, which, with the Bread and Wine, are offered at the offertory procession (the Presentation of Gifts). At the end of the Mass a simple agape follows at the parish hall. Come, let’s be together and celebrate our Faith.
